  • Overview

    The Benefits Analyst is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company benefits structure for Canadian and U.S. employees. This includes designing, planning, and implementing corporate benefit policies and procedures that adhere to legal requirements. The incumbent will be responsible for all benefit related services in regards to setup, vendor management and open enrollment.  The Benefits Analyst will achieve these goals in a cost-effective manner, while administering health plans and retirement programs that meet the needs of employees.


    • Manage all health and welfare benefits programs which includes the administration of medical, dental, vision, life insurance, FSA, HSA, retirement plans and COBRA.
    • Examine possible plan designs and benefits cost changes. Serves as a point of contact for brokers involved in the process, management team, and employees.
    • Partner with HRIS team and lead the efforts to modernize HRIS systems and technologies utilized by the Benefits function
    • Evaluate and compare existing company benefits with those of other employers by analyzing other plans, surveys and additional sources of information.
    • Obtain uniform benefits packages for all company locations, where possible.
    • Prepare and execute, with legal consultation, benefits documentation, such as original and amended plan texts, benefit agreements and insurance policies.
    • Instruct insurance carriers, trustees and other administrative agencies outside the company to effect changes in benefits program.
    • Responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, including, but not limited to COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, PPAC. etc.
    • Develop a program intended to improve understanding of post-employment benefit options for terminating/retiring staff members, including COBRA, Medicare, and non-qualified plan payments.
    • Partner with Payroll to manage the 401(k) program.
    • Lead the annual 401(k) audit. 
    • Updating internal documents and communication to staff members as necessary.
    • Review and approve service provider invoices for payment.
    • Responsible for Open Enrollment for all benefits including system administration (in conjunction with HRIS Manager), employee communication and training.
    • Monitor existing vendor relationships for performance; identify cost savings opportunities and assure accurate payments.
    • Prepare and distribute reports, employee manuals, benefit package descriptions, and other publications.
    • Establish ongoing communication plan via materials such as plan summaries or descriptions, newsletters, home mailings, and so on.
    • Maintain records for pension and life assurance contributions made by employees; liaise with service providers to ensure funds are transferred.
    • Issue ad hoc, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.


    • University degree in Human Resources, Finance, or Business is preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 – 7 years of Canadian and United States benefits administration experience.
    • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation.
    • CHRP would be an asset.
    • Experience managing open enrollment processes.
    • Strong time-management, organizational and relationship building skills; self-sufficient and creative problem solver.
    • General knowledge of audits, income tax forms, health benefits programs, sick pay, retirement plans, and so on.
    • Experience with contract management and management of complex health or insurance plans provided by external vendors.
    • Knowledge of Canadian and US legislation as they relate to the provision of benefits.
    • Strong writing, verbal, and presentation skills.
    • Ability to prepare ad hoc reports using Microsoft Excel.
    • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
    • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
    • Strong customer service focus.
